Tips for Making Better TikToks

TikTok is known as an app for sharing authentic content. Formerly, it was considered a place only for kids to go, but now it’s evolved into an entertainment hub for all generations. According to The New York Times, it’s considered the most successful video app in the world. It’s no secret: we all know how addictive our phones are, but imagine an app that has an algorithm that is so good that it curates content specifically tailored to you. Studies show that consumers spend an average of 24 hours consuming content a month, which surpassed YouTube’s average watch time, which is only 23 hours. Some of us spend even more time on the app than that, especially content creators. TikTok’s algorithm works to optimize two metrics: retention and time spent on the app. It heavily relies on how much time you spend watching each video, as well as other factors, like engagement, captions, hashtags, and sounds. It’s the accuracy of the algorithm that keeps users on the app, and understanding how it works is important to your success on TikTok. However, there are other things you can do to increase your success on the app.

One of the main factors that goes into having a successful TikTok account is focusing on a niche. A niche is essentially your topic of focus. In marketing terms, it’s a strategy you use by focusing on a specific targeted group or niche market. Everyone has a niche, it’s just a matter of finding out what fits your brand and what you can offer your audience. The easiest way to do this is by defining your objective and thinking of who it is you are trying to reach with your videos. Think of a subject of interest. It can be anything! There are countless creators on TikTok, and there are many that have a clear niche. One creator @lovebeav makes TikToks with her parents and promotes her crochet tops by having her family wear them in their dancing videos. It’s comical and a creative way to promote her product. Recently, she announced she was able to leave her full-time job because her account has been gaining so many followers. It’s amazing how your whole life can change with just one viral video. Another creator we found is @capeannlobstermen, a fisherman who shares videos of his lobster, Larry, crushing different objects. It’s entertaining for the audience and engaging because each video is of a request from a comment for Larry to crush something new, whether it be a Nokia or a walnut. Larry’s videos easily get over a million views per post, gaining him thousands of followers each week.  

Focusing on your niche and the types of videos you want your audience to expect from you is key to having growth on TikTok. However, it’s not the only thing that can help you boost your following. We also recommend posting consistently, ideally at least once a day. The more you post, the more your videos will get pushed. The same goes for engagement. The more you comment, like, and engage with videos, the more your videos will get pushed. Don’t ever ignore comments on your videos, even if they’re just a “hello” or “lol”. Responding back shows your audience you are listening and notice them. People leave comments to interact with others on the app, so take the opportunity to add more engagement to your post. Commenting on other posts can also get people to visit your account because if your comment ends up being a top comment, people may want to look at your profile to see who’s commented. 

This brings us to collaborating with creators. If you think commenting on a viral post will get you noticed, imagine what you can get if you made a video with another creator! In order to be successful with this strategy, you have to make sure you and the other creator’s goals align, and that the content you create together is beneficial and relevant to both of your accounts. The last and probably most important factor, aside from having a niche, is trending sounds. Many videos that go viral do so for random or inexplicable reasons. Sometimes, it’s a matter of being in the right place at the right time. By staying active on TikTok, you can stay on top of all the trends and pick a sound that works for your brand. 

There are many reasons why TikTok is notably one of the most popular social platforms today. People love to engage with each other, and TikTok is the perfect platform because there is a place for everyone on it. It’s a massive library of popular songs, as well as the ability for creators to make their own sound; it encourages people to go on the app to listen, dance, and feel however they want to feel. Its algorithm is nothing short of addicting for most users because of how tailored it is to our interests and behavior on the app. Everyone wants to go viral, and with TikTok anyone can blow up. You don’t have to put in years of steady growth to make it big, but you do have to put in energy and time. You have to be strategic about your videos and be active on the app. There are so many communities on the app that you can be a part of, and if you are feeling adventurous, you can be the trendsetter. People are making videos every day, whether it be reaction videos, song memes, tips, or how-tos, there is something for everyone. TikTok isn’t complicated because what makes the app so unique is that you just have to focus on being as organic as possible.
