Starting A Business? Get Your Business Going With These Tips

Written by Courtney Raguso, Social Media Content Creator

Every January marks a fresh start, and many people are feeling the pressure to achieve their goals. Some people set a  goal to lose weight, or pick up that new hobby they have always wanted to try, but others have even bigger dreams and set out to chase them. Starting a business is a massive venture that involves a lot of time, effort, and dedication. Many businesses fail in the first couple of years because of several reasons. These include a lack of capital or funding, retaining an inadequate management team, a faulty infrastructure or business model, and unsuccessful marketing initiatives. Owning a business is not as easy as some may think, and when it comes to starting one, people tend to get the wrong idea on the “why” part. Those who start businesses solely to escape work and get rich quickly, really don’t understand what it means to be a business owner. To be a successful business owner, your heart has to be in the right place.

Before deciding to jump off the deep end, you really have to sit back and ask yourself the “why” questions, and strategize your business plan. It’s obvious that every business owner wants to make money and be their own boss, but there is also the purpose behind the company. Many business owners will tell you that being your own boss isn’t about giving yourself time off, and your business will require a lot of nurturing and attention. Many business owners find themselves working beyond the 9-5 work hours and say it’s something they have to attend to 24/7. If you are just in it for the money and time off, you will be in for a rude awakening. As a digital marketing agency, we see just how many business owners need help because of how much is involved. Some people just don’t have the manpower to do it all, and that’s totally normal when growing your company. When you own a business, you eat, breathe, and sleep your product and service, which is why it’s so important to ask yourself the “why.” Is your product something you are passionate about? What does your product do for the community? What makes your brand different from the others? If there is no passion behind what you are doing, and your product has no purpose behind it, you will face burnout.

Once you can say that this is something you are passionate about, then it’s time to get more technical. If you are trying to achieve long-term success, you will have to ensure the business has financial viability. Is there a demand for your product? You want to avoid making the mistake of spending more on your product than what you can make back. You also want to make sure this is a product that will still be relevant years down the road, and not become another Blockbuster. After you know you have a solid product, now it’s time to define your market. Who is your target audience? Who are your competitors? These questions are important to ask because they will give you direction in how and where to market your product. Defining your audience will be more efficient in the long run because you know you’ll be speaking to people who will be more interested in your product. Also, when you know where your competitors stand, it gives you a better idea of where you stand as well. See how they interact with customers online, how they present their products, and how strong their brand is. That way, you can see what is working for them and what really isn’t, saving you time and energy.

Now, getting even more technical, you’ll want to figure out how you will price your products and market your business. It’s at this point that you must realize how crucial your website and social media will be when it comes to marketing your business well. Before jumping into what that will look like, you will first have to go through the branding process. With a brand guide, you’ll be able to decipher your colors, fonts, packaging, labels, logos, and design elements, which will be used consistently throughout your marketing and branding. Working with a digital marketing agency can make this process a whole lot easier because not everyone is a branding expert. By hiring an agency to do the creative work, you can then ensure you are doing things correctly and more efficiently. Plus, you’ll have more time to focus on other important aspects of your business. As a business owner himself, our CEO Mario Mirabella even admits that sometimes it’s hard for him to focus on his own business needs, because as a business owner, you are always putting your customers first.
