Can’t-Miss 2022 Graphic Design Trends

Written by Kellie Quain, Digital Media Manager

Throughout the last several years, our world has endured quite the rollercoaster with unexpected twists and turns. While the circumstances have been, let’s say, a little messy, graphic design has continued to evolve and become more innovative, original, and purposeful each day. At MSM DesignZ, we take immense pride in raising the bar when it comes to the design of our clients’ digital marketing tools, including logos, social media channels, and websites. Through the use of unprecedented graphic design techniques that truly capture users’ attention, communicating with your business’ audience is now more effective than ever. Let’s discuss three key design trends that will elevate your brand in 2022!

Reimagined Retro

As the recent rebrand for Burger King shown here depicts, the power of nostalgia marketing began to rear its head in 2021, and we expect to see a range of similarly retro-tinted designs across branding in 2022. The beauty of utilizing designs and visual tools that were popular and instantly-recognizable in the 90s and early-2000s is that they allow brands to tap into consumers’ emotions. Companies that use retro or vintage branding design to inspire and engage their audience have the power to transport their customers to a different time and place. The comfort and reassurance an individual feels when they see logos, icons, and color palettes they knew and loved from their childhood provide an instant connection to a brand. At MSM DesignZ, we fondly recall companies such as Lisa Frank and General Mills’ Dunkaroos, which recently made a well-received comeback, with feelings of happiness, comfort, and nostalgia.

For brands with a decades-long history, adopting this retro design trend in 2022 may mean utilizing a previous color palette or font family in a new campaign. For those that lack a long history, incorporating colors, fonts, and icons that are typically associated with the 90s and early-2000s may result in increased brand awareness and engagement on social platforms.

Hello, Serif Fonts

Over the last decade, consumers have seen sans serif fonts being utilized to represent some of the world’s largest and most powerful companies. The famous Google and Microsoft logos, and even our own company logo, are notable examples of sans serif graphic design done well. In 2022, however, brands are expected to place a more dramatic emphasis on fonts that incorporate serif. This category of typography offers companies a touch of embellishment, but must be executed in a very strategic way as to not look dated or over-the-top. Serif fonts are ideal for brands whose goal is to be viewed as more luxurious or feminine.

According to, serifs are typically known to have been credited with increasing both the readability and reading speed of long passages of text because they help the eye travel across a line. This is essential for digital marketing experts to understand because, depending on where the copy or text is being placed, viewers may have only a short time to read and fully grasp the message. A professional, for example, may advise using a serif font within a Google Ad campaign or on an email signature design as these are spaces in which readability could be a challenge given the small amount of space provided. Companies with longer brand names would highly benefit from using a serif font, as well, due to the way in which the embellishment at the end of each letter works together. Burberry, Honda, and J.P. Morgan, among others, are examples of exceptional logos that are universally recognized and dependent on serif typography.

Motion… and Lots of It

Let’s face it: as consumers, we are so used to static images nowadays that it’s hard to capture our attention without something shiny, flashing, or moving. For the brand that wants to disseminate their message and truly engage their audience, 2022 will be the year of the animation. The evolution of technology over the years has made it possible to incorporate movement within digital marketing in more ways than ever before. When an individual visits their favorite website, it is extremely likely they are greeted by a header that includes video footage or moving text. When they scroll on their Instagram feed, there is a high chance most, if not all, of the displayed content is video-based. Companies no longer need a million dollar budget to show their brand in motion, and doing this creates another layer of depth in the brand.

Platforms like TikTok and YouTube, along with newer features on existing platforms, such as Instagram Reels and Instagram Video, allow brands to deliver an added dimension of interaction and engagement when it comes to producing content.

How You Can Elevate Your Branding in 2022

Across the board, professionals agree that one of the best ways to attract your audience’s attention and truly engage them is through visual elements that evoke emotions, trigger actions, and promote brand values. According to data shared by Hoosuite, “1 in 2 people have used Instagram to discover new brands”, which means that creating graphics that allow your brand to stand out from competition is more paramount than ever.
